Afghanistan became the 101st Member of the Madrid System.
New countries continue to become parties to the Madrid System, the protocol thanks to which brands are protected in more than one country with a single trademark application. The protocol will enter into force in Afghanistan on June 26, 2018. From then on, local brand owners in Afghanistan will be able to make register their brands in more than one country by making only one trademark registration application and paying the application fee once.
Turkey became a party of the Madrid System, which is an international brand registration agreement, in 1996. This enabled brand owners in Turkey to protect their brands in all or desired countries party to the protocol by making one trademark registration application. Starting from 26 June, brand owners in Turkey will be able to protect their brands in Afghanistan pursuant to the Madrid System without having to apply to the Afghan authorities.
