Turkey has maintained its title as the European country with the most trademark applications this year as well with a total of 105.996 trademark applications, 81.911 of which are domestic and 24.085 of which are foreign.
A delegation led by Prof. Dr. Habip Asan commented on paten, utility model, trademark, design, and geographical indications applications made last year. Asan stated that in 2018, 7.349 domestic patent applications were made in the field of Intellectual Property Rights and 2.844 domestic patents were registered and that 10.845 foreign patents registered by the European Patent Office were registered in Turkey as well, and said, "According to the report released by the World Intellectual Property Rights Organization (WIPO) last December, Turkey ranks 13th in the number of domestic patent applications".
Regarding the number of Utility Model applications, Asan informed that 2.770 petty patent applications were made in the last year, and added, "A combined number of over 10 thousand Patent and Utility Model applications were made to TÜRKPATENT".
Asan also stated that Turkish Industrial Development Bank Real Property Appraisal Engineering and Consultancy Inc. was established to carry out valuation and commercialization activities in the field of Intellectual Property Rights and that this company, which is owned by TÜRKPATENT, is expected to start its operations as of March as a part of the "Second 100-Day Execution Program" of the Presidency.
Emphasizing that 120.008 trademark applications were made and 105.550 of these were made by domestic companies and persons, Asan said, "Our institution registered a total of 105.996 brands, of which 81.911 domestic and 24.085 foreign. With over 120 thousand trademark applications, Turkey has maintained its title as the European country with the most trademark applications this year as well".
Underlining that a total of 41.567 design applications were made in the past year, Dr. Dr. Asan informed that they expect this number to exceed 42 thousand after the finalization of the design applications made in The Hague and said that around 85% of the design applications made in Turkey are domestic. He also mentioned that according to the WIPO World Intellectual Property Rights Indicators Report, Turkey ranks 4th in domestic design applications.
In terms of geographical indicators, Asan informed that a total of 228 geographical indicator applications, 87 of which were new, were made in 2018, and Turkey's geographical indicator number increased to 400.
