Registration Moves from Foreign Trademarks
Turkey has continued to be the European country with the most trademark applications in the last year. The number of foreign brands registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) reached 24.085, with an increase of 195%.
A compilation made by an Anadolu Agency reporter based on the TÜRKPATENT activity report shows that 120.008 trademark applications were made in the past year. 105.996 of those brands were registered. 81.911 of the registries were of domestic brands and 24.084 were of foreign brands. In 2017, 77.394 domestic brands and 8.179 foreign brands were registered. This shows a 195% increase in the number of foreign brands registered.
The number of foreign patent applications also increased
18.504 patent applications, 7.349 of which were domestic and 11.155 of which were foreign, to TÜRKPATENT.
The number of domestic patent applications decreased by 14.8% compared to the last year, from 8.625 to 7.349. The number of foreign patent applications, however, increased by 4.6%, from 10.685 to 11.155. The total number of patent applications decreased by 4.2% compared to 2017, when the total number of patent applications was 19.283. An increase in the application and registration of geographical indication is observed as well in the last 2 years.
A total of 470 geographical indication applications were made in 2017 and 2018, and 198 of these indications were registered. Thus, the number of registered geographical indications reached 396 as of the end of last year.
The number of applications under examination by the European Union increased to 14 last year with the addition of 4 new geographical indication applications (Bayramiç white, Antep lahmacun, Edremit Bay green scratched olive, and Giresun plump hazelnut).
When the registered geographical indications are distributed by product groups, food products rank first with a rate of 56%. Food products are followed by agricultural products with 21%, handicrafts with 19%, and mining products with 2%, and other product groups.
Istanbul leading in design registration
The number of design registration applications decreased to 36.600 with a 9% decrease compared to 2017.
The number of design registrations decreased to 34.869 with a 9% decrease compared to 2017. Istanbul ranked first in design registrations with 14.998 registered designs. Istanbul is followed by Kayseri with 3.729 design registrations, Bursa with 3.146 design registrations, Ankara with 2.635 design registrations, Gaziantep with 2.451 design registrations, Izmir with 1.518 design registrations, and Konya with 1.348 design registrations.
