Kazakhstan Hits 10,000 Utility Model Patents: A Milestone in Innovation

The 10,000th patent was issued for a utility model in Kazpatent. Reaching the 10,000 patent mark for utility models is an important indicator of the successful development of intellectual property in Kazakhstan. This achievement is especially significant in the context of the Global Innovation Index (GII), where it is considered one of Kazakhstan’s three strongest indicators in the global innovation sphere. According to the GII-2024, Kazakhstan ranked 10th in terms of “Number of patent applications for utility models filed with the national patent authority per billion dollars of GDP at PPP”, which underlines the high level of inventive activity and the introduction of innovative technologies into the economy (data for 2023).

Utility models, often referred to as “short-term patents”, play a key role in stimulating incremental innovation. Over the years, utility models have served as an effective tool for protecting inventions in various industries, including mechanical engineering, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and clean technology. Reaching this milestone is evidence of Kazakhstan’s commitment to becoming a regional leader in innovation and technology. Meanwhile, the bulk of utility model patents in Kazakhstan are related to areas that directly support key Sustainable Development Goals:

• Energy and renewable energy

• Agro-industrial complex

• Healthcare and biotechnology

• Industry and infrastructure
