Ukraine Joins WIPO ALERT Platform to Strengthen Copyright Protection Online

Opportunities for copyright protection in the Internet space have been broadened as Ukraine joins several countries in utilizing the WIPO ALERT platform to combat websites infringing intellectual property rights.

On March 21, 2024, the Ministry of Economy approved an order outlining the procedure for establishing and maintaining a national list of websites raising concerns regarding the respect of intellectual property rights. Through collaboration with WIPO via the WIPO ALERT data exchange platform, member countries can now share information globally on potential infringements of intellectual property rights. Copyright and related rights holders are empowered to request inclusion of problematic websites in the national list through the IP Office. "Despite the challenges of ongoing conflict, we are steadfast in safeguarding copyright and related rights online for both Ukrainian and foreign rights holders.

Ukraine pioneers comprehensive implementation of this mechanism, utilizing a secure online platform where WIPO member states can report copyright infringements based on national norms. This signifies a confident stride towards European integration," remarked Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Economy.

Ukraine's participation marks the fifteenth country to join the WIPO initiative, a significant step towards creating a more secure digital space that fosters intellectual property rights protection and boosts economic development. "The Ministry of Economy's foremost objective is to ensure transparent business conditions in digital content distribution, minimizing unfair competition instances. This enhances economic efficiency for legitimate players, improves regulatory frameworks in intellectual property, and elevates national standards for copyright and related rights protection both domestically and internationally," stated Deputy Minister of Economy Vitaliy Kindrativ. Background Information: The WIPO ALERT Database, managed by the World Intellectual Property Organization, is a secure online platform where authorized participants from WIPO member states can submit detailed lists of websites and mobile applications suspected of infringing intellectual property rights.
