The statistics published by European Patent Office show that Coronavirus epidemic did not affect the number of the patent obtained but the developments were mostly made in the medical technology field. In this context, reminding that there were 181.406 patent applications in 2019, the institution stated that the application number reduced to 180.250 in 2020. This indicates a slight decrease of 0.7%.
EPO published the patent applications filed in 2020 in terms of countries. The report demonstrated that Covid-19 did not affect the number of filings strongly and a major quantity of the inventions were designed in the health sector. The pandemic affected the medical fields severely, therefore a substantial part of the patents filed in 2020 was related to medical technologies and health. In this regard, firms obtained 14.295 medical technology, 8.589 pharmaceuticals, and 7246 biotechnology patents in the last year.
EPO also revealed the patents obtained by companies in Patent Index 2020. In terms of firms, Samsung took the lead with 3.276 patents. Huawei came second with 3.113 while LG followed it with 2909 patents. With 1.711 and 1.634 patents, Qualcomm and Ericson ranked 4th and 5th, respectively.
