Coronavirus Did Not Affect Intellectual Property Rights Applications

Turkish Republic Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa VARANK has indicated that there has been a devastating decrease in Intellectual Property Rights applications in many countries due to the new type of coronavirus epidemic that affected the whole world last year. He has also commented that despite the pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of domestic applications in Turkey in 2020, compared to the previous year.

In his statement, Minister Varank said that 8,200 domestic patents, 3,577 domestic utility models, 41,921 domestic designs, and 170,590 trademark applications (155,913 were domestic applications) were made to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) last year.

Despite the decline in Intellectual Property Rights applications in many countries due to COVID-19 last year, VARANK pointed to an increase in Turkey. He also reported: "The number of domestic applications increased by 1% in patents, 23% in utility models, 31% in trademarks, and 7% in designs compared to the previous year in 2020. Also, registration numbers increased: There were 2,214 patent registrations, 1,145 utility model registrations, 85,729 trademark registrations, and 38,198 design registrations."

VARANK pointed out that there were 17 universities among the top 50 organizations that made the most patent applications last year and noted that 10% of domestic patent applications were made by universities.

Varank also gave information about the companies that applied for the most domestic patents and noted that Turkcell ranked first with 557 applications, Arçelik second with 218 applications, and Mercedes-Benz Türk third with 177 applications.

VARANK stated that most applications were made from Istanbul in the field of trademarks, patents, utility models, and designs in 2020 and he explained that İstanbul was followed by Ankara and Bursa for patent applications, Ankara and İzmir for utility model and trademark applications, and Bursa and Kayseri for design applications.

Varank mentioned the number of geographical indication applications from all of Turkey was 477 last year. He said:

"Diyarbakır ranked first in the field of geographical indications with 65 applications. Diyarbakır was followed by Konya with 55 applications and Gaziantep with 50 applications. In 2020, 164 new geographical signs were registered and our total number of registered geographical indications reached 633. We have 5 registered geographical signs in the European Union, namely Antep baklava, Aydın fig, Aydın chestnut, Malatya apricot, and Milas olive oil."

VARANK stated that Turkey ranked 6. for designs, 8. for trademarks, 14. for patents, and 10. in general in the world in the field of national Intellectual Property Rights applications, according to the World Intellectual Property Rights Indicators Report published in December of 2020.

Varank has stated that TÜRKPATENT is one of the institutions with the highest number of Intellectual Property Rights applications in the world: "Turkey has made the most trademark applications in Europe since 2011. The trademark data of other countries have not been revealed yet for 2020 but we are probably the leader in this field. Also, TÜRKPATENT has been one of 23 international authorities serving under the World Intellectual Property Rights Organization of the United Nations since 2017. Looking at the 2020 data, Turkey ranks 10th in the world with a 1,658 PCT report, with an 82 percent increase from the previous year.
