From the 50 of the overall 58 future-technologies, the USA is the country with the highest number of patent possessions in terms of world standards. The results of the "World-class patents in cutting-edge technologies – The innovation power of East Asia, North America and Europe" study was declared by the Bertelsmann Foundation, the study that argues how the innovation power has transformed between the years 2000 to 2019. From the 50 of the overall 58 newest technologies, the USA is the country with the highest number of patent possessions in terms of world standards, and the country ranks the second for the 8 other technologies as well.
According to the study, East Asia continues its rise in new technologies such as 5G, 3D printing, AI, food and energy conversion, while the USA is the "patent superpower."
Hosting the headquarters of big companies such as Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google, the USA holds about half of all the patents worldwide. In addition, the USA is the leader in digital, health and security technologies by far.
On the other hand, China was not even in the top 3 in the world in terms of technology patents in 2010 according to the study. Last year, however, it ranked among the top 3 countries to hold the most world-class patents in 42 out of 58 technologies studied. China already holds the most world-class patents in 5 technologies in the food and environment fields.
South Korea holds the second most world-class 5G patents as of last year, while Japan holds the most world-class patents in 3 of 58 technologies. These technologies are respectively "electric vehicles", "battery technologies" and "advanced coating".
On the other hand, the study found that European countries do not hold the most world-class patents in 58 advanced technologies. Germany, which has the continent's largest economy, is the second country to have the most patents in 7 technologies. Germany was among the top 3 countries in 2010 with the highest number of world-class patents in 47 of the latest 58 technologies, however, the number of patents decreased by more than half to 22 in 2019. France holds the second highest patent in aerospace technology, while the UK holds the second most patents in smart drug development.
The 58 technologies studied include waste management, battery, energy conservation, fertilizer, precision agriculture, 5G, construction, Internet of things, smart cities, smart grid, smart home, big data, blockchain, cloud computing, AI, quantum computing, augmented reality, cyber security, promotion, finance, defense, nanotechnology, genealogy, vaccine, autonomous driving, unmanned aircraft, electric vehicles, smart traffic, space, and smart factories.
