Technoparks that will Shape Turkey's Future

48 technoparks that combine the academic knowledge of universities with the practice of industry in Turkey, technoparks are operating actively. Technoparks, which entered our lives in the 1950s with Silicon Valley, have turned into important technology production centers in the world today. The number of technoparks, where universities and industrial organizations carry out research, development and innovation studies in the same environment, and transfer information and technology between each other, have reached 48 in Turkey, while their number is close to a thousand across the world.

The first step to technoparks was made in 1990 through the cooperation of KOSGEB with universities under the name of Technology Centers (Tek-Mer), and they were legally constituted by law number 4691 that came into force in 2001. While 61 technoparks, named Technology Development Zones (TGB), were announced by the decision of the Council of Ministers, 48 of them continue to operate actively. 13 of them are not operational due to the ongoing work on infrastructure.

Reached 3,587 Companies

According to the data on the 'Technology Development Zones' provided by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, as of September 2015, the number of companies carrying out R&D activities in 48 technoparks active in Turkey amounted to 3,587, while 179 of these firms were established with foreign partners or by foreigners. The number of partner companies established by academicians reached 824. The companies in technoparks consist of 39 percent software, 19 percent computer and communication technologies, 7 percent electronics, 5 percent machinery and equipment manufacturing companies. A total of 36,556 staff are employed in 48 techoparks operating in Turkey as of September 2015, while 22,193 of them are R&D personnel. In technoparks, 7,636 software personnel and 1,695 support personnel are also employed.

2 Billion Dollars of Export

Companies in technoparks export to developed countries, ranging from the USA to Japan, from the UK to Germany. While the export of technoparks was 383.9 million dollars in 2014, their imports were 46.4 million dollars. Technoparks collected 6.9 billion liras in sales last year, while their budget reached 27.7 million liras. As of September 2015, the total sales amount by technoparks reached 32 billion 228 million TL and the total amount of exports reached 2 billion dollars.

25 Thousand Ongoing Projects

Among the 25 thousand projects carried out in technoparks, 17,498 of them were completed, while the number of ongoing projects was 8,029. Also within the 8530 patents registered across Turkey in the last year, 6.7 percent of them were from 48 technoparks. Within 1,560 patents applied from technoparks, 572 were registered, and 152 of 199 utility model applications were registered.
