New top-level domain names ".istanbul" and ".ist" provided by İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Medya AŞ have been opened for application.
The promotion ceremony for the new ".istanbul" and ".ist" domain names and extensions was held in the Saraçhane building of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbaş stated in his speech that they follow the technical developments in the world in many areas from infrastructure to transportation and social projects. Topbaş expressed that the ".ist" and ".istanbul" domains will provide a significant expansion in Turkey as well as in the world, and said that "Istanbul joins cities such as London, New York, Rome. Now, all companies and sectors will be opened to the world and the internet, under the domain of Istanbul. In addition to creating considerable advertising value, this will bring important conveniences."
Will Carry Brand Value To The Digital Platform
Stating that ".ist" and ".istanbul" domain names emerge as national brands, Topbaş said:
"These brands, emerging as national domains, will carry Istanbul's strong brand value to the digital platform. These domains will be used proudly because they have considerable brand value. As of today, applications for registered world brands will be received first. We will open it to public institutions after March 1. Turkish brands, non-governmental organizations, associations and foundations can register after 1 March. Individual applications will be made after May 10. If there are multiple applications, we will put it up for sale through auction. Our Medya AŞ company will carry out this. This will also be an important source of income for Medya AŞ. From the region, from Turkey only Istanbul applied."
Top Level Domain Names are Expanding
David Olive, Vice President of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), stated that the networking power of the digital economy positively affected sectors such as education, health and public, and emphasized that top-level domain names are expanding and hundreds of top-level domains have become operational.
Olive said that in addition to gaining a place on the internet globally, the ".istanbul" and ".ist" domain names will help reach opportunities beyond the country and the region.
At the end of the meeting, the websites www.ibb.istanbul and www.kadirtopbas.istanbul, published under the domain names ".ist" and ".istanbul", were introduced.
".istanbul" top-level domain names aim to "improve the service levels of public institutions and businesses by supporting innovation, support Istanbul residents in accessing city administration services with easy-to-remember addresses, and help local and global businesses grow and develop by offering new opportunities".
