Success of a Middle-School Teacher

Senem Çabuk, a technology and design teacher, has achieved to be the only teacher from Turkey being accepted to NASA's project called "Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students", out of her curiosity of the outer space.

Senem Çabuk stated that while doing research for her academic studies, she realized a project called "Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students" designed by NASA for teachers and students, and that she applied for project and got accepted.

Providing information about the project, Çabuk said: "Maximum 12 students are accepted to this project. Because it is not supposed to be a crowded one. Students are expected to have a certain level of English language skills, and to be interested in geography. They are supposed to be students who can keep up with the technology, because it is totally a computer-based project".

"Students communicate with astronauts"

Stating that they tested the project on February 9-12 for the first time, Çabuk noted: "We logged in with the user name and password provided by NASA. We were given the right to take 250 photos. Each of our students viewed an average of 20 photographs. Specifying the information of parallel, meridian, local time zone, and the International Space Station (ISS) of any location on the earth using the user name and password given to themselves, students communicate with 6 astronauts in the orbit of the location they choose, and requested images.

"19 countries out of 204 were chosen"

Emphasizing that 19 countries out of 204 were accepted to the worldwide project and she and her students were the ones accepted from Turkey, Çabuk noted that the project was aimed at helping middle school students acquire knowledge on earth, and "This is a project that detects students interested in astronomy and physical geography of the earth and countries, and help them improve themselves in this area. And the students I chose are the ones who are interested in these areas," she added.
