German scientists have developed artificial neural system to teach robots to "feel pain".
Researchers from Leibniz University, which is located in Hannover, explained that artificial neural system enabled robots to "detect physical diseases invisible to outside, measure the possible damage that could be caused by the relevant disease, and take precautions to eliminate the disease".
The researchers, who have used the data obtained from "Research on Understanding Human Pain" when developing the artificial neural system, tested the system on a robot arm, having placed pressure and heat perceptive sensors on the its fingertips. Functioning just like human neurons that transmits pain to the brain, the artificial neural system can rank pain as light, moderate, and severe.
Johannes Kuehn, the research coordinator, noted: "Pain is a system that actually protects us. This system allows us to escape from what causes the pain when we get hurt. The artificial neural system that we have developed will help us understand and interpret the pain a lot better." The research has been published on IEEE Spectrum website.
