Organized by Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), Technology Development Foundation of Turkey (TTGV), and Turkish Industry & Business Association (TÜSİAD) in order to place Turkey among the countries that develop technology and to encourage the development of innovative products, the 12th Technology Awards found their owners. With a record of 170 applications from 23 cities from small and medium size enterprises (SME) to large enterprises, and 36 finalists competing, 12th Technology Awards ceremony was held with the participation of Cansen Başaran-Symes, the CEO of TÜSİAD, Cengiz Ultav, the CEO of TTGV, and Prof. Dr. A. Arif Ergin, the President of TÜBİTAK.
Stating that Turkey has achieved an important breakthrough in R&D and innovation, Prof. Dr. A. Arif Ergin, the President of TÜBİTAK, pointed out that the Technology Awards had created an important brand move in the sector, and he added:
The R&D expenses of our country has been over $17.5 billion this year according to the purchasing parity. It is a good number. But we are far behind countries such as China and India. The axis is told to shift from west to east. If we want to be in the right place in this axis and upgrade our level, we need a change of paradigm. We must leave the efficiency economy and move to the information economy. Instead of economies per kilogram, we must adopt a technology-idea focused mindset. As TÜBİTAK, we are ready to do our share of the work. We have started a restructuring move in this sense. Our product and economy contribution oriented supports, which are already available but have reached saturation, will continue. In addition to this, we will provide new supports considering our international negotiations and the expected industrial revolution. This approach will be shaped by addressing to technology or product developers, not to those who say 'Support me'. We are opening an international collaboration environment at the same time. Finally, I would like to thank not only the award winners and the owners of 36 finalist projects, but also all companies that prove they are different from others by making an application. I want them to continue to develop technology. We will continue to support you."
Cansen Başaran-Symes, the CEO of TÜSİAD; "In our recent activities at TÜSİAD, we have focused on the effects of digitalization on the industry. As a country, we must take the opportunity of the fourth industrial revolution and make use of it. We repeat it at every chance. The industry 4.0 will provide us with the potential of access to a cycle of increasing value-added investments, instead of a low value-added production cycle. "The industry 4.0" expression is used in the 65th government program as well. We are pleased with it."
Stating that they give great importance to the approaches which will increase the global competitiveness of the industry and provide technological transformation, Cansen Başaran-Symes said that they had started working to create a platform about the Industry 4.0 in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology.
Stating in his speech at the ceremony that TTGV had funded thousands of projects at a level of SME (small and medium size enterprises) for 20 years, Cengiz Ultav, the CEO of TTGV, explained that they had started working for Turkey to export technology, and that their support on this matter would continue. Noting that Turkey needs to export high-technology products in order to achieve a breakthrough in the following 10 years, Ultav added:
"A few years ago, technology was considered a contributing factor along with capital and workforce. Today, technology is one of the basic elements of economic success just like other variables such as capital and workforce. Where we have come today is very important. Because a great breakthrough in technology in the following 10 years awaits. In order to achieve a breakthrough, we, as a country, must focus on safe platforms and make moves altogether. During this focusing, it is of great importance to support industry from technology to capital and workforce in a way that would bring breakthrough. 170 companies that have participated in our organization this year, and 36 finalists among them, come from 25 cities of our country.
There are both large and small companies among them. I believe that these distinguished companies will have an important role in creating the platform, where new ones will join them, to help Turkey achieve a breakthrough."
